December

I can’t believe it’s already December. I love this time of year, but, honestly I could do without all the holidays making what little we have of fall and winter fly by. Meanwhile stinking, hot summer lasts from mid-April to Halloween with no big holidays to break it up.

Anyway, unlike most years where I’m busy with random chaos and crafting until I realize Christmas is a week away and I still haven’t decorated, I got out our little Charlie Brown tree yesterday and let the boys decorate it. I stayed in the next room folding laundry so I wouldn’t be tempted to micromanage.

Because that pretty much sums it up. They did a good job, though, and since they did it, I’m less likely to keep rearranging ornaments to get everything just right.

The lighting in that room is terrible. You can make out the toddler-height holes starting to develop while the top of the tree is looking a little crowded. I predict that by Christmas, the bottom of the tree up to about 3.5 feet off the ground will be bare except for lights.

If you look closely, you’ll see some painted pinecone decorations. When Finn was little, I got a huge batch of pinecones and spray painted them red, white and silver. Then I tied jute twine loops on them for hooks. That way, I didn’t have to worry about broken glass if he took them off the tree. He really didn’t bother with them much, though. As you can see, I’ve since gotten braver with ornaments, as have my children.

Have a wonderful weekend, and if you’d like to stay up to date on sales and new items in my Etsy shop, please sign up for my newsletter using the box to the right or at the bottom if you’re mobile. Thanks!

Quick Takes Friday, Vol. 9

Finnian got these glasses at school for looking at Christmas lights. They look like old 3D glasses, but make normal lights look like this:

They have ones that look like Santa, elves, stars and a few others I can’t remember. Pretty cool.

Finn also brought home knowledge of the Gummy Bear song. What, you haven’t heard of it?

Evil I say.

Beckett went for his repeat blood test today. The one he had at his nine month checkup showed some weirdness in some of his white blood cells. At this point I’m assuming it will be Monday before I hear anything. I’m sure my little elf will keep me busy in the meantime.

I really want to start eating cleaner and healthier. It’s crazy how hard it seems. You’d think finding food that isn’t insanely processed and full of chemicals wouldn’t be that hard. Really it is hard to find the good stuff at my local supermarket and what I can find is more expensive. To get a good selection, I have to drive an extra 20 minutes in traffic. People often say shopping farmer’s markets are cheaper, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I’m sure it will get easier once I work my way into it. For now, it’s just frustrating.

Maybe I’m starting early on the New Year’s resolution thing, but I also want to get back into exercising regularly. I love my elliptical, but it’s so solitary with a busy family and my postpartum joints still aren’t quite up to the challenge. Just before I found out I was pregnant with Beckett, I had this overwhelming desire to run. I’m wondering if this might be an option with a good stroller so B can keep me company.

I’m taking bets on when Beckett will start walking. Cautious Finnian gave me a blissful 13 months. Beckett goes headfirst into any and everything. Today he took a few steps with the help of a sturdy push toy. He’s only about 9.5 months old. 😛

Quick Takes Friday, Vol. 8

— 1 —

Thanksgiving was nice and relaxing, for the most part. The turkey was yummy, although the bacon prevented the skin from getting crispy. But, there was bacon. We kept things fairly simple. I didn’t even have a pumpkin or pecan pie. None of us LOVE them, and Blue Bell was on sale, so we went with ice cream. Last night, though, I oddly craved pumpkin pie. Must be some weird turkey association. If we’re crazy enough to leave the house today, I may see if Kroger has any pumpkin pies left.

Sweet moment I caught while setting the table.

Beckett has developed a way to critique food. If he likes something, he holds it up in the air and babbles about it for a few seconds. Foods he’s less than fond of get dropped unceremoniously off his tray. He approved of the turkey and disapproved the dressing. He seemed to like the cranberry sauce, but it was too slippery for a full, over-the-head approval.

Beckett had his 9 month check-up Wednesday of last week. He’s doctor likes to do blood work at that check-up to check for anemia and lead and maybe some other things. I missed a call from her Friday evening, so I called the office Monday to find out the results. Normally they leave an “everything’s fine” message if the results are normal, so I’m assuming something is up. Her nurse returned my call Monday afternoon to tell me that the doctor wants to discuss the test results with me, the doctor is out of the office until this coming Monday and no, she can’t tell me anything, I have to wait for the doctor. Fun times. Last year at Thanksgiving I was hoping that Mr. B wasn’t anemic. This year, I’m all “Fingers crossed for anemia!”

I woke up this morning with another sinus headache. It’s beginning to become a Friday tradition. 😛 Today I was lucky in that Chris was here to watch the kiddos, make me coffee and start a shower for me so I could attack it with hot steam and caffeine since the Sudafed and ibuprofen weren’t working. It has calmed to a dull ache, as long as I don’t bend over, or move my head in general. Thank you crazy Texas weather.

I’m thinking I need to do a “5 Quick Takes Friday”, since I seem to lose steam after five. I know my life has to be interesting enough to post seven random, interesting things every Friday. I suppose I could go to Walmart for five minutes. That should give me enough material for all seven posts today. The only problem is that I am not insane.

I can’t decide where to put the Christmas tree. We have a nice, fluffy, big tree that is huge in our house, and we have a smaller, slightly Charlie Brownish tree that I bought last year thinking it would work better. I would really like to go all out and do the pretty tree, but I’m having a hard enough finding the room for even the Charlie Brown tree.

Beckett’s Twoddler gift guide

With the crazy, gift giving holidays right around the corner, here’s my list of sure to be a hit items for your twoddler. (Twoddler – the 5 second window between mobile baby and fully walking toddler.) All items have been tested and approved for fun by Beckett. Bonus! You probably already have most of these items at home. Even better, twoddlers don’t care that something isn’t new. They actually seem to prefer the oldest, grossest thing they can find.

  • Printer
  • Dangling wires
  • Big cardboard box
  • Kleenex
  • Little cardboard box
  • Cat
  • Toilet paper roll (full or empty)
  • Trash can (full preferred)
  • Paper (tissue, wrapping, printer, newspaper, important documents, etc.)
  • Hair
  • Floor Cheerios
  • Medium cardboard box
  • Sunglasses
  • Phone
  • Clothes hanger
  • Lotion bottle
  • Spoon
  • Fork
  • Knife
  • Video cassettes (Title/VCR not important. They aren’t going to watch them anyway.)
  • Coffee cup (full or empty)
  • Anything that dangles
  • Rocks
  • Plastic boxes

Disclaimer: Beckett only tested items for twoddler funness, and possibly the amount of crazy things they make me say as I try to remove them from his twoddler death-grip. He wasn’t really concerned with safety testing. If safety is a concern for you, you should probably consult a different gift guide.
