Quick Takes Friday, Vol. 6

— 1 —

B is still congested. It is getting better, but laying down=congestion=no sleep. Luckily B is perpetually happy, sleep or no sleep. Me, on the other hand…

I just got this cute bag in the mail yesterday. (I got the blue one.) I can’t wait to stuff it’s zillion pockets with emergency supplies that I’ll probably never need unless I forget to pack them. I’m even more excited to see that the sale price I paid for it last campaign was less than half of the current campaign price.

— 3 —

I found out that the driver behind the 911 fun yesterday morning had been arrested sometime after the mailbox/gas line destruction for similar shenanigans up the road. I’m very thankful that nobody was hurt. I’d also like to know what kind of indestructible tank he drives.

— 4 —

Beckett loves Elmo. I think he even said “Eee-uho” yesterday. Sorry Sweetie. I’m sure da-da will be next.

— 5 —

Finnian had started writing and illustrating his own books. He can crank out two or more a day. I love his creativity, but I’m now faced with the problem of what to do with all of them, not to mention his schoolwork, report cards, random artwork, etc.

— 6 —

Finnian and one of his friends have decided that their pets who died have returned as ghosts to play with and protect them. So far it seems to be fun pretend, but knowing Finnian’s imagination I’m waiting for it to get a little extreme.

Why is it taking so long for a laundry washing/drying/folding machine to be invented? Even just an automatic folding machine would be nice. In other words, I‘ll be spending the day with a mountain of laundry. I am seriously contemplating a “naked at home” policy.

Quick Takes Friday, Vol.5

— 1 —

Today is the best Friday of the year. Know why? Daylight Savings Time (a.k.a. Hell) ends this weekend! I swear, I never adjust to the torture that is DST, so for over half the year I’m fighting my body’s internal clock. It’s almost over for this year, though. I’m so happy I might throw a party. Or cry tears of joy. Or just sleep. (More anti-DST fun)

Is there some weird DNA coding in young boys that tells them to move slower when you’re running late, or is it just my boy? It also seems to affect how tired his normally full of energy leg muscles are when walking to school.

November is National Novel Writer’s Month, aka NaNoWriMo. I gave up all pretense of trying to complete something remotely novel-like in November about six years ago. Even so, I still feel a twinge of anxiousness at the beginning of November. It’s like the feeling I get when there’s something I need to do, something I should be doing but either can’t or am just being lazy. The result is my wanting to smack anyone who mentions NaNo in my presence. Oddly enough, 90%-ish of my twitter and FB friends are writers, at least for the month of November. I might need to take a month long social media break.

Wasps are making yet another nest near my front porch. Getting the kids in and out of the house without getting stung has become a sort of sport. Chris likes wasps because they eat the web worm larva that attack our pecan (that’s puh-cahn, not pee-can<-gross) trees. I like pecans, but I like not getting stung and having to stay drugged up on Benedryl for two days better. But with the Beckett attached at the hip (and, um, two days of Benedryl coma if I get stung), Chris has to be the one to get rid of the wasps. Since he sees them as beneficial, he tends to drag his feet about it. I’m thinking of announcing a cooking and/or leaving the house boycott this time in hopes of getting it done faster.

Our high temperature for today is supposed to be 88 degrees. Someone please inform the weather that it is November.

— 6 —

Why is it so hard to find soft-soled baby shoes? With cooler weather coming (I hope), B needs some shoes to keep socks on his feet. The only shoes I have for him are some clunky Nike shoes someone gave him. I refuse to make him wear them for these reasons. I finally broke down and ordered some soft, non-slip baby shoes online, even though I really wanted him to try them on first. In the meantime, I’ll have to continue to deal with the annoying “Where’s his shoes?” remarks from people even though it’s 80 degrees and he’s not walking and always in a sling/stroller/buggy whenever we’re out.

I really wish Caillou would get a year or two older. Maybe then he would stop whining.

The Finnian and Beckett Show

Notes on the video:

Yes, it’s 5+ minutes long.
Beckett is doing most of the dancing himself with me holding him up. I’m not actually shaking my baby.
Shadow is our dog.
The camera is doing the filming by itself.
Finn is 6. Beckett is 4 months.
Yes, I do starve him.

Routine and Driving with Mr. B

I’m usually a laid back, just roll with it kind of mom when it comes to routines and schedules, but with so much cleaning I need to get done before the weekend, I thought I’d try to add a little structure to our day. After reading this post on schedules at Fountains of Home (found through camp patton) I tried the sleep, eat, play pattern with Beckett.

When we got home from our morning chauffeuring, Beckett was asleep, so I let him nap in his car seat. He woke up after about an hour, so I changed him, and let him eat his fill. Then we played for a little while, mostly making faces at each other with a few baby presses thrown in. (Multitasking at it’s finest–entertaining baby while shaping my arms.) When Beckett got tired of that, I strapped him to me in the mei tai carrier and proceed to vacuum the house. The movement, closeness and noise knocked him out after about two rooms. I was able to lay him down for a thirty minute mommy’s lunchtime nap.

We did that again about two more times before after school pickup time. I managed to wash a sink full of dishes, vacuum and mop my whole house, fold two baskets of laundry and wash two others, and take in a pair of my jeans at the waist with a quick and obvious method I learned at some blog I came across on a night of digging deeper and deeper into tutorial blogs. If I can find the blog again I’ll post a link. If not, I’ll post a tutorial and hope someone can point me to the original tutorial. Because I want to give proper credit an because they probably have other cool tutorials I need.

In other news, Mr. B. is almost able to sit in a Bumbo seat. Rather, his chunky thighs wedge him into the seat, but his head is still a little bobbley and he leans back in the seat. He seems to enjoy it, but I’m afraid he’ll hurt himself like that. At the rate he’s growing, I’m not sure if he’ll be able to use it much when his head finally stabilizes. His thighs already stick in the Bumbo so that I have to pry it off his bum when I pick him up.

Happy little chubchub.

Mr. B also hates the car. HATES. I’ve tried toys, music, windows up, windows down, everything I can think of to help. We finally discovered a soothing, albeit problematic solution while flipping radio stations about a week ago. See, Mr. Beckett apparently is either a fan of large posteriors or Sir Mix-a-Lot. I can get him to calm down in the car by turning on “Baby Got Back.” And leaving it on. Loud. On repeat. Over and over and over and….. I wouldn’t really mind, except that half the time I also have my five six year old in the car, too. I really don’t need him to start asking why an anaconda would care about buns. But it’s either that or NON STOP, BLOOD CURDLING SCREAMING.

There’s also the fact that our AC isn’t working as well as it should, at least for the front seats. So, I usually have my window rolled down. While driving through downtown. And blasting out “I like BIG BUTTS and I can NOT lie!” I’ve already noticed a few looks. One guy about fell off his scooter turning to look at us. If I was quicker with a camera (and not driving) I would totally start taking pictures of the looks for an album.
