Quick Takes Friday, Vol. 16

I think Beckett decided to help out around the house more now that he’s a big one year old. Yesterday he dumped out all the cloth wipes to find the perfect one to wipe the floor with. He also decided to help me clean out the fridge. Fun times.

— 2 —

Something akin to the plague seems to be going around. Chris and Finn had it a few weeks ago, I had it last weekend and poor B was feverishly tossing and turning and coughing most of last night.

— 3 —

Some mornings require coffee before you can think clearly enough to make a cup of coffee. Luckily Chris was sweet enough to make a pot before we left for drop-offs this morning.

— 4 —

I just realized that between the Valentine’s for the kids, birthday cake and sick baby we completely forgot to have Beckett open his birthday presents. #TotalMomFail

— 5 —
Due to the plague, I decided to be lazy and just pick up a little cake from Kroger. I found one that met my birthday cake requirements of being a white cake with buttercream frosting. Hmmm, does that look like white cake to you….
Shares his mommy’s feelings on chocolate birthday cake.

Gratuitous baby picture.

Have a great weekend and go get some half-priced chocolates. I’ll take them if you don’t need them. 😉

Quick Takes Friday, Vol. 15

There’s about a month until Valentine’s Day. All the stores have switched from Christmas red to Valentine’s red. Every time I see it, it makes me a little sad in a nostalgic sort of way, because last Valentine’s I was busy with this:

This year I’ll still be busy with that little creature, it will just be more of a please-don’t-climb-on-that-and-hey!-what’s-in-your-mouth-no!-don’t-put-that-there-come-back-here-I-need-to-change-your-diaper-don’t-chase-the-kitty-and-why-is-your-mouth-orange sort of way. I told Chris last night that I kind of miss the days of being able to put him down somewhere and him staying there.

— 2 —

Of special note to new parents: Be wary when changing a morning diaper and discovering that it is dry. Particularly if the diaper-wearer is a boy. You would think I knew this by now.

— 3 —

The other bad thing about Valentine’s Day being right around the corner is chocolate. Not that chocolate is bad. I love chocolate. That is precisely the problem. I can’t go anywhere without seeing Valentine’s chocolate. Valentine’s stuff makes me a little weepy. Weepy makes me need chocolate. Oh, hey! Look! There’s a four pound box of chocolate right here….

— 4 —

The other thing that makes me weepy but in a why-do-I-torture-myself way is Elementary. Seriously, did the writers even read the Sherlock Holmes stories? Or did they just decide to make a crappy detective show about a semi-intelligent detective named Sherlock and his handler Watson, because Sherlock Holmes is cool now. If you hear a loud bang next Thursday night, it’s probably just my head exploding.

— 5 —
What’s the scoop on Downton Abbey? Everyone is raving about it. I even had a sweet reader recommend it a few weeks ago. It looks a little too Austen-esque for my tastes, but maybe I’m mistaken.
— 6 —

Since we’re talking shows, I recently watched Farmageddon on Netflix. Now, I have never tried raw milk. I don’t really like milk to begin with, so having to hunt down a reputable source for raw milk isn’t something I’m that motivated to do. Why, though, is it such a big deal that we have all sorts of laws and restrictions on it? I mean, we can pasteurize eggs in the shell, but we don’t require it, and people can get sick from raw eggs. People can get sick from raw fish but you can sell and eat sashimi. Raw and under cooked meats can make you sick, but you can still buy rare cooked steaks and delicacies made with raw meat. Why does it seem like raw milk is singled out, and why don’t we just let people make their own decisions about what to put in their bodies in the first place?

Ummmmm….. TGIF?

Quick Takes Friday, Vol. 14

Today’s I’m being all multi-tasky and combining my New Year’s goals post and Quick Takes Friday post. I say goals rather than resolutions because goals are to work toward while resolutions imply immediate, permanent change. With resolutions, it’s easier to say “forget it” if you slip up. With goals, there’s no failure. You keep progressing as long as you don’t just give up.

My personal goal is to get healthier. I’m not just focusing on weight loss, but all around health. Steps to meet that goal are:
1. Eat more natural foods. Babysteps: avoid trans-fats and HFCS. Next: If I don’t have a clue what an ingredient is, I probably shouldn’t eat it. Ultimate: Rarely eat anything containing ingredients that aren’t easily available to me.
2. Drink more water! Ideally half my weight in ounces. I can do this. I feel great when I go this. Then I forget and it is torture to get back in the habit.
3. Eat out less. I really don’t mind cooking, as long as I can do it without a crying/clingy Beckett following me around while I cook AND for the cleanup.
4. Exercise. Walking, elliptical, Wii Fit, whatever.

My SubEarthan Cottage goal is growth. This past year was sad as far as sales. Granted, I intended to take it slow with Beckett arriving, but he’s almost a year now. It’s time to pick back up.
5. Create at least two new ready to sell items per week.
6. Have one day each week to photograph new items.
7. List new items weekly.
8. Post at least one SEC related tutorial or informative blog post per month.

Quick Takes Friday is being hosted here this week. Our usual host, Jen from Conversion Diary is in the hospital with pregnancy complications. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

I pretty much stayed away from my computer while visiting our family, so Merry Christmas three days late. Sure, I could have auto posted on Christmas, but that would require far too much planning on my part.

— 2 —

Before our trip, B was fine, but Finn’s recurring cough that sounds horrible enough to make everyone cringe was back in full force. Two days into the trip, Finn wasn’t coughing, but Beckett was coughing and running through boxes of Kleenex. Not in the fun toddler Kleenex all over the floor way, either. At this rate, I’m pretty sure It will be a few months before I can say we’re all healthy without feeling like I’m jinxing myself.

— 3 —

Beckett has started waving. He clearly knows it’s cute, because he does it when he gets caught doing something he shouldn’t as well as the appropriate times.

— 4 —

Beckett has also started turning his slobbery baby kisses into baby love bites. It’s cute, but I’m sure I need to make it stop before they turn into real bites.

— 5 —

I haven’t uploaded trip pictures yet. Sorry.

— 6 —

I did get my Holiday box from http://www.influenster.com/ and will be blogging about the awesome things I was given to try soon. I still have a few invites to give out, so if you blog/tweet/fb and are interesting in doing product reviews, send me your email.

We decided to get a Wii after years of an Atari being the only game system in our house. (I’ll wait while you Google Atari….) My sis and her hubby were upgrading to a Wii U, so they gave us their Wii for Christmas. Yay!

I have seen that it’s possible to get a Wii to play DVDs. There’s an instructible for it and everything. I would love to be able to move our bulky DVD/VHS player, since we rarely watch our VHS tapes, but I don’t want to break the Wii trying to do it, either.

Yes, we have both an Atari and VHS tapes we actually use sometimes. And I am familiar with Pong. At least we don’t have a Betamax.

Still getting the last of our Christmas prep done. Note to self and everyone else who travels for the holidays: no breakable gifts. It’s hard enough wrapping gifts to travel well. Worrying about one breaking is a nightmare.

What do you get when you combine a Charlie Brown-esque tree, a toddler, and a six year old tree decorator? This:

You can’t really tell in this photo, but the ornaments stop about three feet from the ground, and there aren’t any glass ornaments at all.

— 4 —

I need a new series to watch on Netflix. My favorites are House, Sherlock, Monk, Doctor Who, and Endgame (Hulu). I tolerate Elementary, but since it’s a new series I only get it one episode at a time. I’ve watched every episode of them that are available multiple times, so I need something new.

— 5 —

I really wish Chris’s ISD would have called school off today. I’ve been thinking about keeping Finn home. With all the end of the world stuff and idiots who think calling in threats after the horrific events of last Friday I’m a little on edge about what craziness might happen. I worry more about the school where Chris teaches, though, and unless they cancel, he has to go in.

I kept Finn home today. They had their Christmas party yesterday, it’s a half day (dumb, according to him, because no music or PE), and they’re not having a spelling test. Besides, it’s 29 degrees, so too cold to walk, esp. with his cough, and I didn’t want to have to get up extra early to drive Chris to work. It has nothing to do with end of the world nutjob paranoia.

— 6 —

Hilarious.

— 7 —

blahblah. Sorry. I got nothing. Oh, wait, I probably won’t post again until after Christmas, so have a safe and happy Christmas.
